Somewhere in Arizona (a new blog post by Professional Mom)

Somewhere in Arizona

It had been a most rewarding trip. Joe and I flew to Cali to welcome our newest grandbaby, Naomi. Along the way, we helped with meals and school duties for the new family of five.  After a few bumps in the road, emergency room trips for the new mom and our son’s virus-turned strep, it seemed they had settled in and we took off as scheduled in our Uber to pick up a rental car to drive to Ft. Huachuca, Arizona to visit our children there.

It’s not hard for folks with grown children to understand the dynamic of staying in their home for an extended period. Now, as we are used to our quiet lifestyle, we decided that a night in a hotel would be called for between visits.  It was about a five-hour drive through the mountains to our half-way point, both comfortable and uneventful, but as we pulled up to the hotel entrance, I noticed that one of my earrings was missing.

I have traveled the world, in airplanes, trains and cars, and I have a small cache of single earrings, I know better, I lose them all the time. This time I was determined to search for it, both in the car, in my things and even in the hotel lobby. It was an inexpensive piece, given by a friend, but still, why was I so intent on finding it?

I guess because I hate losing things, so much so I keep most everything important somewhere in sight or in an easily accessible place. And though it adds to my reputation for clutter, I can usually find anything I am looking for.

But it reminded me of some of the Parables Jesus told in the Bible. One is about a man who lost one of his sheep. “What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine and go after that which is lost, until he find it?” and when he has found it, he calls his friends and neighbors together, and says, “ Rejoice with me; for I have found the sheep which was lost.” (Luke 15: 3-7) Jesus said there would be more rejoicing in Heaven over ONE sinner that repents than over the ninety-nine that need no repentance!

Then there was a woman who had 10 pieces of silver and lost one…when she found it, she called her friends and neighbors together to rejoice with her that she had found it. (Luke 15: 8-10) Again, He likened this to the celebration in Heaven over one lost soul who repents!

Certainly, an earring is not a sheep or even a coin, however, somewhere in Arizona, I was reminded of Jesus’ love and sacrifice. Because I lost something.

Luke 19:10 says “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
